    There is an alternative approach to keep the main melody tones original and construct the appropriate pure intervals based on the melody note.

    1) Reconstruct the acoustics of the Leipzig Churches. 2) Limit the size of the audience accordingly. 3) Ban professional singers, females, and those over the age of 18. (This probably automatically cuts vibrato singing to a minimum.) 4) Consider the size of the organ lofts. 5) Refrain from showy tempos. SOLI DEO GLORIA was the motto. Do all this if you desire to explore the musical experience of the time. To explore the musical substance of the music, study Bach's scores. I have been doing it for the last 60 years. For much of the clavier compositions, there is a historically correct choice of clavichord, harpsichord, or organ. Most of Bach's music sounds great even when interpreted by balalaika ensemble, accordion, or synthesizer. What does that tell you about the Idealbesetzung for the cantatas? Rifkin or Richter, YOU decide.

    Very interesting to hear this brief history of chant from an early music musician as opposed to those singing the chants in the traditional Latin Mass. I would like to hear your comparison of the interpretations of chant rhythm-Cardine vs. Old Solemn style. It’s quite the controversy in the Latin Mass community. As a director and singer of Gregorian chant, I might differ with your undertones of criticism toward the Solesmes interpretation of chant. I have studied chant from Solesmes monks and heard their explanations as to the decisions of the monk scholars in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There was nothing random about their decisions as to the rhythm and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude for notating the entire liturgy. Without their years of study and publications the last century of chant revival would not have happened.

    Thank you so much for this excellent video. I want to add one thought: Look at all the baroque architecture in Italy, southern Germany, Vienna and Prague - it is full of vibrato! At the same time El Escorial was built with absolut straightness. So I can imagine how the music of the past was performed in many different ways.

    Ah, these reinassance musicians. "not writing flats is a mortal sin!!! You can omit sharps though". What were they thinking?? What was the point of writing music down in the first place if the information was so approximate? 😅

    I absolutely love that Liszt recording. It's so loose and free that it almost sounds as if the three lower voices are the song and the top voice is background music from that's being picked up by mistake. So peaceful

    Hi. I'm trying to adapt your score for a woodwind quatuor. I'm wondering, the last note of the 2nd variation is really a F natural ? Not sharp ?

    • @aikifab
      @aikifab 20 днів тому

      I found the answer : it's actually F natural, because it's not the last note of the phrase. The actual end of the phrase is a E at next bar, which makes more sense... Sorry for the stupid question ...

    Since I was at first confused by the spelling of the name, a little side note from Wikipedia: "Hugh Aston (also spelled Asseton, Assheton, Ashton, Haston;[1] c. 1485 - buried 17 November 1558) was an English composer of the early Tudor period. While little of his music survives, he is notable for his innovative keyboard and church music writing.[citation needed] He was also politically active, a mayor, Member of Parliament, and Alderman."
